The term ‘Adab’ epitomize the humanist concerns of classical Islamic education.
The concept of adab stood for the “ethical and practical rules of conduct” deemed praiseworthy. Additional connotations of adab include the knowledge necessary for a certain profession; good breeding (proper upbringing of children, their morals, and their good behavior); courtesy; etiquette, refined manners; aristocratic learning; and urbanity.
Muslim thinkers have increasingly understood the importance of Adab as a philosophical foundation of Muslim worldview. It is recognized as the discipline that assures the recognition and acknowledgment of one’s proper place in relation to one’s self and society. The loss of adab is thus loss of justice, moral dislocation and corruption of knowledge
‘As to the internal causes of the dilemma in which we find ourselves, the basic problems can – it seems to me – be reduced to a single evident crisis which I would simply call the loss of adab.’ Noted the great philosopher Sayyid Naquib al-Attas.
We need to bring back adab as a necessary pre-condition of all knowledge. It is tantamount in upbringing a generation to positively engage with manifold challenges of the modern era. Let our kids read, learn and entertain in Adab.
